2012 IUCN – Thomson Reuters Environmental Media Award

Welcome to the 2012 IUCN - Thomson Reuters Environmental Media Award. Submit an article for your chance to win a trip to the IUCN World Conservation Congress in South Korea in September!

The Award
Established in 1998 by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and IUCN, the Award aims to raise global awareness of environmental and sustainable development issues by encouraging high standards in environmental reporting worldwide.

The Prize
The winner of the 2012 IUCN - Thomson Reuters Environmental Media Award will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Jeju Island, South Korea, from 6 to 15 of September 2012, to attend IUCN’s 2012 World Conservation Congress, the world’s leading summit on the environment.

The winner
The competition closes at 17:00 CET on 15 June 2012. The writer of the article with the most votes at the close of the competition will be deemed the winner. IUCN reserves the right to disqualify inappropriate or offensive entries. The winner will be announced on 1 July 2012.

How to vote
The first time you vote, you'll need to click on "Connect to vote" and then to allow the application. After that, just click on "Vote" to vote for your favourite article — you can vote once per day between 15 May and 15 June 2012.

How to enter
The 2012 IUCN - Thomson Reuters Media Award is open to journalists and writers across the world, writing for any publication, website or blog.

To enter, simply read the terms and conditions, submit your article between 15 May and 15 June and then get your friends and colleagues to vote for you.

Your article should be a maximum of 450 words and focus on an environmental issue, ideally relating nature to human well-being, and capture the interest of a wide audience. You can write something specifically for the competition or enter a previously published article, but you can enter only once.

Please consider the following when submitting your article:

- Originality of subject: The capacity of the article to surprise the reader by covering a new issue

- Quality of treatment / content: Quality of style, structure and reliability of information

- Quality of investigation / research: The author’s thoroughness in researching, compiling and incorporating relevant information in the article

- Links to mainstream issues: The capacity of the article to relate environmental issues to mainstream political, economic, social and cultural concerns

- Potential public impact: The capacity of the article to make an impression on general public opinion and to translate specific environmental issues into common terms so as to convey them to the widest possible audience
